Reasons to be walking…

I really enjoyed this week’s episode of ‘Reasons to be Cheerful’, the usually uplifting podcast from Ed Miliband and Geoff Lloyd. 

It featured Neuroscientist Prof. Shane O’Mara from Trinity College Dublin, who recently wrote ‘In Praise of Walking’. As you might imagine from the title, it sets out the health benefits – physical and psychological – of being less sedentary and a lot more mobile. Turns out that goal of 10,000 steps per day isn’t so rubbish after all!

I really enjoyed listening to the audiobook late last year and invited Shane (who actually taught me when I was an undergrad at Trinity) onto my own podcast back in December. You can listen to that episode here.

I’ve always enjoyed walking through cities and find it a great way to explore new places – weather permitting – but Shane’s book really inspired me to up my game and walk to and from my office a lot more. I’ve become quite the convert to walking and keeping track of my steps using my Apple Watch.
